I know a person who was recently laid off from his organization.
He is a very experienced person and is paid huge. The management told him
that he is an expensive resource and hence they cannot afford to pay him.
He worked hard for the company and has seen many successes. A farewell party was arranged for him. His manager praised him for his efforts in the party and asked him to
give a speech about what he feels about the company. He hardly spoke something.
Obviously when a person is with so much of grief about being laid off and finding very tough to get a new job matching his experience and salary, can surely not talk with happiness even when honored. On his last day he wrote an email to everyone saying that he was waiting for the day to leave the company and his dreams came true.

I wonder two things about this. The farewell party is a convention that’s followed in any organization. Be it the employee quits by himself or him being laid off. In this case when he is being laid off, it’s really ridiculous that the company expects him to share his happiness about his tenure in the company.

The second thing is the person was a contractor and also wishes to remain as a contractor.
He wants to earn more and doesn’t want to fit into the rules and regulations of a company. He very well knew that one would be laid off any point of time being a contractor. Knowing the outcome, there is no point that he can feel bad about his situation. Even now he doesn’t want to become permanent employee somewhere.
I feel he cannot blame the company. Writing a last day email saying that he dreamt to leave the company was like absolutely showing his anger to the people.

At some point there is a attitude problem everywhere.

Disclaimer: I haven’t concluded anything about the person or his company here.
I have just shared a scenario that commonly happens.

Yeah... Surely its an attitude problem from that person whereas from the employer end I would like to name it as "Not capable of handling the situation". It reminds me of the difference between a Leader and manager.

An efficient leader could have defntly handled the farewell without embrassement for any1... on the other end, the employee enjoyed all the extra benefits like few thousand dollars extra every month with the risk of being laid off anytg.... So I expect him to take this in a matured way. No free lunches you see.

Hmm,

A well documented post. Actually there are many things in life.. which has become a part of the routine and ppl dont deviate considering the situation.. like
1. Share happy moments in a laid off moment.
2. Asking a victim on public TV, what you think should be the punishment for hte convict
3. PM's asking " Happy about the hike" when handing over the appraisal results.
lots to go..
Overall a nice thought provoking post.

True... itz purely the attitudinal problem. His attitude may be entirely showing gratitude towards only money (which is just a part of the life). Even otherwise it can be commented - Money rules over him.
